Ensuring ongoing environmental monitoring and protection at LLP Aktauneftekhim, as well as minimising environmental impacts, is undertaken through the company’s integrated industrial safety management system. The main mechanism used in that endeavour is an environmental management policy consistent with the requirements of the international ISO14001 standard.

An independent audit undertaken by LLP Aktauneftekhim in 2020 confirmed the company’s compliance with the ISO 14001: 2019 environmental management system. A key area of focus in developing an environmental safety system concerns the ongoing transition from implementing initiatives targeted at eliminating any harm to nature in favour of the ongoing assessment of potential environmental risks and the implementation of initiatives to prevent any occurrence of manmade environmental impacts.

Engaging with stakeholders

The company holds public consultations when developing projects, during which all stakeholders are informed of potential environmental impacts of planned activities, and given access to documents. The development of new nature protection programmes, and the introduction of new environmentally-friendly technologies (“eco-technologies”) are undertaken with the involvement of scientific and research institutions. Programmes to preserve biological diversity, in particular, are being developed in conjunction with the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution (RAS).

Direct dialogue with representatives of government agencies takes place under the auspices of LLP Aktauneftekhim’s annual ecology conferences, to which employees of the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Federal Service for the Supervision of Natural Resources (Rospridrodnadzor) are invited. Participants discuss problematic issues in current environmental protection legislation, new approaches to regulating manmade environmental impacts, the outlook for eliminating longstanding and cumulative environmental damage, and global changes in environmental legislation.
